It really was the last time the four of us worked together in earnest. And maybe I picked up on that; maybe I sensed that and maybe that had something to do with the sort of the desperation and the approach to try and get as much as possible out of it. I wrote something like over 50 songs and we recorded this entire pile of stuff.

Billy Corgan: The Rolling Stone Interview
The grunge era was the last era where a whole host of people were able to charge up the hill together. I can’t really think of another time with a sustained sense that something was happened. You had the late Nineties with Korn and Limp Bizkit, they did some really great work. But it seems like that was the last era where it seemed like there was this bigger thing happening beyond the music. Rock in the mainstream culture has lost a lot of its mojo. It might have something to do with people are no longer interested in bands trying to get on the charts.

He inducted one of his biggest musical influences, Pink Floyd. He played acoustic guitar during the ceremony with Pink Floyd, when they performed their song "Wish You Were Here". At any rate, talking like this never seriously impeded the Pumpkins in the 1990s, when they released a handful of classic records, racked up awards and had hit singles in the US and UK. The Pumpkins exemplified their “refuse to choose” Gen X milieu, flitting between noisy and tender musical styles that bridged raucous grunge and emotive indie rock.
Was it his incandescent baldness, a look he adopted before he turned 30? The fact that he wasn’t “the cute one”, which he was known to complain about in interviews? Whatever it was, it hung over Corgan by the time the Pumpkins broke up in 2000, and certainly when they re-formed a few years later with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin as the only other member of the original lineup. Slowly, Corgan became far more written about for the things he said and did – being pictured grimacing on a rollercoaster, say – than the music he continued to make.
He’s brilliant, and his vision of what the NWA is is very cool and original in the fact that he’s not trying to compete with everybody else. Perhaps it’s not surprising that the past few years have welcomed a handful of profound changes in Corgan’s life. Now 55, he was recently engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Chloe Mendel, whom he notes – with another wry look, like one you might recall from the backseat of the video for single 1979 – he met through his divorce lawyer. (He was married to the art conservator and artist Chris Fabian from 1993 to 1997.) He and Mendel have two children, six-year-old Augustus and four-year-old Philomena.

His once-luxurious locks began to thin, and he eventually embraced a bald look. This transition from a mane of hair to a clean-shaven head was a significant transformation. The public reacted with both confusion and admiration when Corgan shaved his head in 2018. Some were disappointed that he had gone against their expectations of him as an iconic rockstar, while others praised him for taking such a bold step. Regardless of their opinions, most people seemed eager to learn more about why he had made this drastic decision. Corgan’s explanation hints at a deeper reason for wanting to make such a drastic change.
It’s really just turned a key that many people said could never be turned again. An album like Mellon Collie gave me the confidence that I could do what I wanted to do, and if I did it really well there would be an audience for it. To be able to put your arms around 24 years of music, it’s really fun.
True to form, he follows this pronouncement with something less effacing. “If you want to say there’s been 172 rock stars in the last 100 years, OK, well, then I’m one of them.” He says it lightly, in the way that suggests he knows how this could read, but again, it’s not untrue. Whether you’re a fan of his music or simply curious about hair loss, Billy Corgan’s journey offers valuable insights and life lessons. Billy Corgan, the iconic frontman of the legendary rock band Smashing Pumpkins, is not only known for his music but also for his distinctive bald head. Physically, hair loss can have a very noticeable effect on ones appearance. Hair grows differently on different parts of the body and can affect how someones face looks.
We could have made a perfect record; they would have given us the budget to make a perfect record. It’s perfect that way as Dark Side of the Moon is perfect for its time. It was a messed-up generation; it was a messed-up time. And now in hindsight, we can see even moreso how messed up it was. Mellon Collie is weird in that it’s a combination of nihilism, sentimentality and epic hope.

To this day, Corgan sports a bald head as an expression of his free spirit. In summer 2009, Corgan formed the band Spirits in the Sky to play a tribute concert to the late Sky Saxon of the Seeds. However, Byrne and Fiorentino would later leave the band in 2014.
[Album co-producer] Flood wanted to record Mellon Collie in there, which really surprised us. We’re working in there and I think [co-producer] Alan Moulder and I were in the other room, and all of a sudden one of the pipes burst. And suddenly, this massive amount of water is coming out of the floor and was flooding the entire floor. We were trying to throw all the equipment in a corner where it hadn’t flooded. But meanwhile there’s gallons of water coming out of this pipe and you don’t know when it’s going to stop.
Over the years, Corgan’s hair loss has been a subject of curiosity and discussion among fans and the media. Many theories have been proposed about why Billy Corgan decided to shave his head. Some suggest it was an act of rebellion against society’s expectations of him as an older rockstar; others posit that it was part of an initiation into religious orders such as Buddhism or Hinduism; while some believe it was simply done out of convenience or style preference. Most likely, all these factors influenced Corgans decisionbut only he knows the true reason behind it. Rather than cling to a fading hairline, Corgan opted to turn his baldness into a signature look, a bold move that resonated with fans and became an integral part of his public persona.
While there is no confirmation from him on this matter, it is possible that he wanted to symbolize spiritual transformation by shedding all physical haira practice traditional among some sects within these belief systems. Similarly, some argue that shaving ones head could represent humility before Goda concept found in several major religions around the worldor signify mourning for loved ones lost during difficult times in life. Mellon Collie debuted atop the Billboard charts, a rare feat for a double album. When we made Mellon Collie we were like, “We need to get on the radio. We need to get on MTV.” It didn’t affect our thinking to the point we compromised. The production on “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” is so dark I can’t believe that was a big hit song. We went for it just like Mötley Crüe went for it in the Eighties.
When was the last time you listened to Mellon Collie all the way through? I think when I listen to old records, it puts me back in the atmosphere of what it felt like to make the record and who was there and what the room looked like. If I go deeper than that I start to remember the funny stories. When we were recording we had a rehearsal space we called Pumpkinland.
You remember these funny little memories when you listen. Corgan also used a wide variety of guitars on Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. On "Where Boys Fear to Tread", Corgan used a Les Paul Junior Reissue, and on "Tonight Tonight" he used a '72 Gibson ES-335. He is also known to use a '74 Strat which has since been painted baby blue.
